Break Down of Dance Avenue Class levels:

Preschool Level, 3-4 year olds.  Ballet and Tap classes are offered at this age level in which children begin to learn the basic fundamentals of dance. In order to join we ask that students are ready for a classroom setting and that they are potty trained, or close to it.  However, we will register a student who is almost three years of age and fits all requirements.

Kindergarten Level, 5-6 years old.  Students at the Kindergarten age level, or near to it, are able to attend classes in Ballet and Tap.  Also, starting at this level, students can now join a Jazz class!  Students begin to learn basic dance techniques, dance terminology and proper dance classroom etiquette.

Level 1B, 7-8 years old.  At this age level students begin to expand their education of dance as well as progressing through their dance technique.  Students are now able to join the Hip Hop and Lyrical classes as well as Ballet, Jazz, and Tap.  Dancer's at this level are encouraged to take as many classes as possible in order to become a well rounded dancer.

Level 1A, ages 9 and up.  Students further their dance knowledge as well as terminology.  Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and Lyrical  dance classes are available to this age group.  Students with prior dance experience are now eligible to audition for the Dance Avenue Competitive Dance Team which allows dancers the benefit of additional performance opportunities.

Level 2, ages 10 and up.  By this level, students are expected to comprehend and understand their basic dance terminology and will continue to further their dance skills and technique.  Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and Lyrical are available to this age group as well as the eligibility for the Competitive Dance Team (by audition).

Level 3, Intermediate.  Female students are now able to start their Pointe Shoe training!  We ask that students have at least one year of Ballet experience before starting their Pre-Pointe classes.  Students should also be retaining their dance knowledge both mind and body while starting to see a lot more of their personal dance style showing through.  Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Modern and Competitive Dance Team (by audition) are also available at this level.

Level 4, Advanced.  Students begin to advance their dancing technique at a much higher level.  Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Modern and Competitive Dance Team (by audition) are taught to advanced dancers not yet of the High School age.  This class allows younger dancers with the ability to perform many advanced technique movements the chance to excel their abilities.

Level 5, High School (and above) Advanced.  This level is reserved only for the most advanced dancer.  We require that any dancer attending this level be of High School age or above and are already able to perform many advanced dance movements and turns.  Any student that is in this level may be asked to stay in level 4 if an instructor feels that s/he is not yet ready for such an advanced setting, regardless of age.  All Dance Avenue dance styles are available to this level as well as the Competitive Dance Team (by audition).

Adult Classes, Beginner - Intermediate.  This class level is perfect for beginning dancer's, teenagers through adult, who are interested in learning the basic techniques of Hip Hop and Tap dance.  Classes start at a beginning level and progress to an intermediate level troughout the course of the school year.

Dance Avenue Competitive Dance Team.  Dance Team membership is by audition only.  Dancers, 8 yrs. and older, are welcome to audition for this award winning and nationally renowned Dance Team.  Only dedicated and disciplined dancers need apply.  For more information please click on the Dance Team link on the top or at the bottom of this page.

Definition of Dance Avenue Dance Styles:

Ballet –  Originated in the Italian Renaissance Court then further developed in France and Russia.  Highly technical form of dance with it’s own vocabulary.  Notable for its technique, such as Pointe work, turn out of the legs, and high extensions.  Noted for its graceful, flowing precise movements, with ethereal qualities.  Choreography often set to orchestral/classical music.

Pointe – The act of standing on the tips of the toes while performing steps from Ballet.  Dancing on Pointe is performed using hard-toed and stiff-shanked Pointe shoes.  Requires strength and skill and is a central part of the advanced female Ballet dancer’s training and repertoire.  Young girls usually start their Pointe training around the age of twelve and are not considered ready for Pointe work unless they have previously had several years of Ballet training.  Dancing en pointe requires one to use the entire body for support, including the legs, back, and abdominal muscles.

Jazz – Often influenced by other dance styles such as Acrobatics, Ballet, Contemporary, Lyrical, and Hip Hop. In turn, many other dance styles are influenced by Jazz dance. As a result, many of the moves that are common to Jazz dance can also be found in other dance styles.  An important factor of Jazz is expression. Good Jazz routines express the music through dramatic and grandiose body movements.  Isolations, upbeat music and high energy characterize Jazz. This is the style that is most frequently seen in music videos and films.

TapThe name comes from the tapping sound made when the small metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch a hard surface.  This lively, rhythmic tapping makes the performer not just a dancer, but also a percussive musician.  A style of American theatrical dance using precise rhythmical patterns of foot movement and audible foot tapping. What is now called Jazz dance evolved from Tap dance, so both dance styles have many moves in common.

Lyrical – Fusion of Ballet and Jazz dance.  Uses dance to interpret music and emotion.  Movement is meant to show the meaning of the music and tell a story. Mainly performed to music with lyrics and the songs lyrics are a driving force and key inspiration for the movement.   Has a poetic, expressive quality characterized by or expressing spontaneous, direct feeling.  Choreography is meant to express deep personal emotions while being highly rhapsodic and enthusiastic.

Hip Hop – A street dance style that has evolved as a part of the Hip Hop culture and primarily danced to Hip Hop music.  Can include a wide array of styles such as Breaking, Popping, Locking, Krumping and House dance.

ModernOften about experiment and pushing the boundaries of dance.  Discovering new ways of using music and sound in relation to movement.  Often associated with what is today considered Contemporary Ballet as Modern dance pulls much of its technique from Ballet dance.
