Ballet – Originated in the Italian Renaissance Court then further developed in France and Russia. Highly technical form of dance with it’s own vocabulary. Notable for its technique, such as Pointe work, turn out of the legs, and high extensions. Noted for its graceful, flowing precise movements, with ethereal qualities. Choreography often set to orchestral/classical music.
Pointe – The act of standing on the tips of the toes while performing steps from Ballet. Dancing on Pointe is performed using hard-toed and stiff-shanked Pointe shoes. Requires strength and skill and is a central part of the advanced female Ballet dancer’s training and repertoire. Young girls usually start their Pointe training around the age of twelve and are not considered ready for Pointe work unless they have previously had several years of Ballet training. Dancing en pointe requires one to use the entire body for support, including the legs, back, and abdominal muscles.
Jazz – Often influenced by other dance styles such as Acrobatics, Ballet, Contemporary, Lyrical, and Hip Hop. In turn, many other dance styles are influenced by Jazz dance. As a result, many of the movements that are common to Jazz dance can also be found in other dance styles. An important factor of Jazz is expression. Good Jazz routines express the music through dramatic and grandiose body movements. Isolations, upbeat music and highly energized choreography characterize Jazz. This is the style that is most frequently seen in music videos and films.
Tap – The name comes from the tapping sound made when the small metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch a hard surface. This lively, rhythmic tapping makes the performer not just a dancer, but also a percussive musician. A style of American theatrical dance using precise rhythmical patterns of foot movement and audible foot tapping. What is now called Jazz dance evolved from Tap dance, so both dance styles have many moves in common.
Lyrical – Fusion of Ballet and Jazz dance. Uses dance to interpret music and emotion. Movement is meant to show the meaning of the music and tell a story. Mainly performed to music with lyrics and the songs lyrics are a driving force and key inspiration for the movement. Has a poetic, expressive quality characterized by or expressing spontaneous, direct feeling. Choreography is meant to express deep personal emotions while being highly rhapsodic and enthusiastic.
Hip Hop – A street dance style that has evolved as a part of the Hip Hop culture and primarily danced to Hip Hop music. Can include a wide array of styles such as Breaking, Popping, Locking, Krumping and House dance.
Modern – Often about experiment and pushing the boundaries of dance. Discovering new ways of using music and sound in relation to movement. Often associated with what is today considered Contemporary Ballet as Modern dance pulls much of its technique from Ballet dance.
