Competitive Dance Team
Audition Information

Serious dance students (ages 8-19yrs old) are invited to audition for the award winning and nationally renowned Dance Avenue Competitive Dance Team.  Auditions will be held in Lyrical, Jazz, Tap and Hip Hop dance styles and High School aged students may audition for a Competitive ONLY Solo.

Auditioning students are encouraged to participate in a four-day Dance Intensive.  Monday, August 16th - Thursday, August 19th.  During this Dance Intensive students will learn the choreography and technique that will be performed in the Audition.  For more information please contact the studio by phone, 734 759-3102, or email, danceavenue@yahoo.com.

Mandatory meeting on Friday, August 20th at 6pm for all parents and students interested in auditioning for the Dance Avenue Competitive Dance Team 2010-2011.  Dancer's that do NOT attend this meeting will not be allowed to audition.

Audition Requirements:
 ~ Dancers: Please do not audition if you are involved in other extra-curricular activities with conflicting schedules.
 ~ Parents and students must realize that becoming a member of the Dance Avenue Competitive Dance Team requires a great deal of discipline and dedication and financial obligations must also be considered before a dance student auditions.
 ~ Dance Avenue Competitive Dance Team will only accept dancers, ages 8-19 yrs of age.  Exception: Adult Competitive dance routines consisting of adults, ages 18 and up, will be considered depending upon the discretion of the studio directors.
 ~ Audition applicants must have at least one year of dance experience and technique training.
 ~ Dancer's must be enrolled in a Dance Avenue Ballet Technique Class in order to audition for and be a member of the Dance Team.  Gentlemen dancers are also required to attend a Ballet Technique Class, but performance in the annual Dance Avenue Recital is optional.
 ~ Students must have a good academic standing outside of the studio.  If not, we kindly ask that they do not audition.
 ~ If you are a High School Senior, it will be your responsibility to juggle all Competitive Dance Team performances and events along with your senior events.  If you think this will not be possible, please refrain from auditioning.
 ~ A signed waiver must be returned before Saturday, August 21st or you will not be able to audition.
 ~ If a dancer acts inappropriately in the audition only one warning will be given, upon a second warning the dancer will be asked to leave the audition.
 ~ Throughout the auditioning process dancers are expected to diplay a positive attitude and be respectful to the studio directors and fellow auditioning dancers.

Audition Dress Code:
All female dancers must wear a black leotard with footed ballet pink or carmel colored tights with proper dance shoes.  Hair must be worn in a bun with bangs securely fastened back.  Female dancers may wear fitted black shorts, but they must first be verified by a studio director.  Gentlemen dancers must wear a white fitted t-shirt and black cut off sweats or gym shorts with proper dance shoes.  Student's dance attire will be checked before entering the audition room.  If a dancer is dressed improperly they will be asked not to audition.

Audition Selection Process:
The Dance Avenue Competitive Dance Team will consist of dance students selected through the auditioning process by a panel of judges.  These judges are NOT employees of Dance Avenue.  Judges will evaluate and critique dancers based upon their technique, personality, showmanship and how well they comprehend and perform the given choreography and technique movement.
Each potential Competitive Dance routine requires a pre-determined number of dancers, as decided upon by the choreographer, the judges are asked to select the best dancers for each routine based upon each individuals performance during the audition.
Judges will choose several alternates ("runner ups") for many of the Dance Team competitive routines.  The role of an alternate is to take the place of a dancer in the event that a team member cannot perform.  Alternates are considered members of the team and are expected to attend all rehearsals, conventions and competitions.  If an alternate is needed to take the place of another dancer, it will be their responsibility to purchase the costume from that dancer and all costume alterations must be done and paid for by the alternate.  Directors reserve the right to utilize their discretion regarding whether to place an alternate into a Competitive Dance routine or not.

Competitive High School Level Solos:
Competitive Solos are for High School (and above) dancers ONLY.  Judges will decide the specific solo dance category for the dancer auditioning.  Competitive Solo rehearsals are scheduled under the discretion of the choreographer.  Soloists also will have their own set of seperate fees and these must be taken into consideration before auditioning for a Solo.  Solos are not performed in the June Dance Avenue Recital.  No Exceptions.

A Note To Parents:
The purpose of the Dance Avenue Competitive Dance Team is for our dance students to receive additional performance opportunities while gaining strong character, self confidence and a deeper understanding of the world of dance in a competition and convention setting.  Our Dance Team is NOT geared towards the gain of trophies and acclaim, it is meant to promote studio spirit and members are expected to be positive role models for our studio.  All team members will be required to work hard as a TEAM in achieving goals, while exhibiting good sportsmanship at rehearsals and performances.
Please encourage your dancer to audition, as this is an important learning process about expecting the best from themselves and building self esteem.  However, some students may fear the rejection that comes along with the auditioning process.  With your help, we will do our best to encourage our dancers to reach for their goals, as well as help them understand that fear is a part of the growing process, and even if your dancer does not make the team they shouldn't be discouraged from auditioning again in the future.
